The reason very disturbing burglary at Food Etc. has set alarms bells ringing on the Estate in more ways than one.  We’ve had burglaries before, but the level of wanton distruction and number of people involved (suspected to be girls) is leading police to believe that there could be a potential escalation in trouble.

The Internet is not accessible for all residents, so for the time being it has been decided to suspend the blog in favour of a simple leaflet drop, undertaken by members of the Action Group with the help of volunteers.  Copies will be also available in the drop-in centre.

We were making good progress in cleaning up the Estage and need to work together to keep things moving in the right direction.  This nasty incident must not deter us.

We will keep in touch, but would ask everyone to stay vigilant and feed back to a member of the Action Group, or the police, if you have any information.

Thank you.

As you may have heard, the new shop Food Etc. on Manor Street was burgled and wrecked on Sunday evening. According to the police a group of six teenagers, mostly girls, wearing hoods and masks were seen running away from the shop in the early hours after setting off the alarm and causing a great deal of disturbance and destruction. It appears the shop was totally ransacked for high-priced and easily sellable items including cigarettes and alcohol. Refrigerators and other equipment were badly damaged.

The police believe that the gang may be from our estate, or associated with it. If you know anything about this robbery, if you have heard anything or if you are offered cheap cigarettes or bottles of spirits, then please contact Detective Inspector Michael Worthing in confidence on 01632 4961212, or talk to any member of the Eastburgh Estate Action Group. We can’t beat crime without your help.

Agent X, where are you when we need you?

Tuesday’s meeting, to discuss the new ASBOs, was a great success. There was a good turnout and a strong, interesting debate. It was also refreshing to see so many new faces, particularly those who stayed afterwards to talk about the Eastburgh Estate Action Group and what they can do to help.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Just a reminder to all members of the Action Group and all our supporters and sympathisers that we’re having a meeting at 7pm on Tuesday to discuss Tony Blair’s new proposals on ASBOs.

We’re specially keen to use this as a chance to recruit new members to the Action Group. Over the last couple of months the Estate has really turned a corner, despite the disruption caused by the local bad elements. If we can get more local residents working with us in 2007 then it’s only a matter of time before we can reclaim the Estate and make it a decent, safe place to live and bring up a family again. So please come, and please bring friends.

ASBOs – Tony Blair says estate resident groups should be able to apply for them. But are they a good thing? Do they work? And how will this affect the Eastburgh Estate?

On Tuesday 16th January at 7pm the Eastburgh Estate Action Group will be having an open meeting in the repaired and redecorated Community Centre. Local councillor Sally Hendricks will be there for a discussion on ASBOs and Eastburgh, followed by coffee and snacks. Entry is free and all residents are welcome – please bring your friends.

Rotas: update

07Jan07

Is anyone willing to take Justin Nugent’s 6pm-8pm shifts on the evening patrols from now for the next month? Justin is unavailable because – and you should never have admitted this to me if you wanted it to stay a secret, Justin – he’s a complete Big Brother addict and won’t be able to prise himself away from the show. If you’re willing to take over his shift, at least until Cleo Rocos gets evicted, please contact him or Diane to arrange.
